Irish Times names Kevin O'Sullivan as editor

The new editor of the Irish Times has been named as Kevin O'Sullivan, an internal candidate who has been news editor since 2006. He succeeds Geraldine Kennedy who retired from the position on Thursday. Staff said O'Sullivan is "a very, very popular choice" and "huge cheers" went up in the newsroom when he was announced as editor in a meeting at 3.30pm on Thursday. O'Sullivan, 51, has been with the paper since 1997 and served as night editor, special projects editor, editor of the Health supplement, and environmental and food science correspondent. He saw off six internal candidates to get the post. • To contact the MediaGuardian news desk email [email protected] or phone 020 3353 3857.
