London 2012: Team GB victory parade confirmed for 10 September

Hundreds of thousands of fans are expected to line the streets of London for an Olympics victory parade in September, officials have confirmed. All of Team GB will be invited to take part in the event that will wind its way through the centre of the city on 10 September, to honour the British athletes who have taken part in the Olympics and Paralympics. Many people have been left frustrated after missing out on tickets for the Games, and organisers say the parade will give fans and competitors the chance to celebrate together. The parade is expected to pass through the City of London and on to Trafalgar Square before arriving at the Queen Victoria monument in front of Buckingham Palace where the athletes will congregate for the finale. The confirmation of the event came as Team GB took their gold medal tally to 18 – with wins in showjumping and cycling on Monday. It was an emotional day for the gymnast Beth Tweddle, who has won three world championships but never an Olympic medal. Her bronze in the uneven bars capped the sport's best Games ever, doubling GB's all-time medal tally to six in 10 days. There are more medal possibilities in the cycling, triathlon and athletics on Tuesday. It is 104 years since the UK won more than 19 gold medals but with six days to go Team GB is already just one behind the total for the Beijing Games four years ago – and has 40 medals in total. Lord Coe, the London 2012 chairman, paid tribute to the public for embracing the Olympics, describing the Games as an "emotional rollercoaster". "My message is a massive thank you to the people of this country. Am I surprised? Probably not. Is it one of the most extraordinary things I've seen in my lifetime? Yes, it is," he said. The British Olympic Association said it hoped to release more details about the parade later this week, adding that the event would celebrate the achievements of all British athletes who participated in the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
