Cabinet reshuffle: ministers break the news on Twitter

Tuesday's cabinet reshuffle by David Cameron is being dubbed the first Twitter reshuffle as outgoing and incoming members tweet their moves. Lady Warsi ( @sayeedawarsi ) signed off as Conservative party co-chairman in a tweet from the official @ToryChairman account: It's been a privilege and an honour to serve my party as co-chairman , signing off @ torychairman , signing on @ sayeedawarsi — Tory Chairman (@ToryChairman) September 4, 2012 In response to Warsi, outgoing Welsh secretary Cheryl Gillan also used Twitter to confirm her return to the backbenches: @ sayeedawarsi signing off @ welsh_secretary too but I agree great privilege to serve in cabinet but can serve party from back benches too :) — Cheryl Gillan (@Welsh_Secretary) September 4, 2012 Over to @ cherylgillanmp — Cheryl Gillan (@Welsh_Secretary) September 4, 2012 The official No 10 account has also been used to announce parts of the reshuffle, including a new face as Northern Irish secretary: PM appoints Theresa Villiers as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. # reshuffle — UK Prime Minister (@Number10gov) September 4, 2012 PM appoints Chris Grayling as Secretary of State for Justice. # reshuffle — UK Prime Minister (@Number10gov) September 4, 2012 Minister for climate change Greg Barker MP tweeted his reaction to Andrew Mitchell's move from international development secretary to chief whip: Andrew Mitchell will be great, reforming Tory Chief Whip, affable, thoughtful, bold moderniser, but with real steel in his backbone! — Greg Barker (@GregBarkerMP) September 4, 2012 No news yet on justice secretary Ken Clarke, but a newly created spoof account had this to say on the reshuffle: Dave and Nick going to IKEA was such a cop out. I was in Cabinets before they were flat pack. They can't fix furniture or the economy. — Ken Clark MP (@KenClarkeMP) September 4, 2012 The spoof Ken Clarke perhaps sensed his time as justice secretary was up. And correctly so: PM appoints Chris Grayling as Secretary of State for Justice. # reshuffle — UK Prime Minister (@Number10gov) September 4, 2012 Ken Clarke has suffered a demotion: PM appoints Kenneth Clarke as Minister without Portfolio (attending Cabinet). # reshuffle — UK Prime Minister (@Number10gov) September 4, 2012 The shadow justice secretary, Labour's Sadiq Khan, shared the concerns of the Howard League for Penal Reform regarding Ken's demotion and tweeted: Perhaps Cameron might wish to explain what, during his 28 months at Justice, he thinks Clarke did wrong to warrant being moved? # reshuffle — Sadiq Khan MP (@SadiqKhan) September 4, 2012 He added: Look forward to shadowing Chris Grayling – will he ditch Ken's policies or is it more of the same? # reshuffle — Sadiq Khan MP (@SadiqKhan) September 4, 2012 We'll be updating this blogpost as other changes are announced.
